Frostpunk is a simulation and strategy game of managing a city struggling to survive after apocalyptic global cooling, the only heat coming from the generator in the center of town. Players must keep their citizens hopeful and happy while making decisions and enacting laws that may be unpleasant and morally questionable, but are necessary for people to survive. Research new technology, scout the frozen wasteland for extra resources and more survivors, develop automatons that can work endlessly, and push through the harsh winter. Frostpunk was released on XBox One and PS4 on October 11, 2019. Frostpunk was released on PC on April 24, 2018. SOURCE: Frostpunk Wiki The StartWith the game's approach to the concept of survival, the player does not only have to worry about the availability of resources, but also the the concept of having enough heat so that citizens do not fall ill. The main aim of the game, from beginning to end, is to keep optimal heat levels to battle the ever decreasing temperature of the game, as it becomes more and more unforgiving. For this reason, there are three steps recommended to a beginner to undertake when starting a new city in order to have a start which has long lasting potential. The steps include:
1. Immediately Pause the GameFrostpunk is a simulation game, which means it has the tools available to the player of pausing and playing the simulation, or even to speed or slow it down. This is found on the left side of the top UI underneath the resources (Coal, Wood and Steel). The main reason why pausing the game immediately is so important, is that it gives the player a breathing room to figure out the environment in which they had loaded in to. In some instances, at different loadings of the game, the stockpiles are located in different areas. As such, it is beneficial to the player to find all the stockpiles, and the resources collection areas, such as coal mines, iron ore deposits, etc. before starting the simulation. This gives the player the ability to have a good plan of attack. 2. Sign a New LawWhen the game first loads and the player has paused the simulation, a new law can be passed right then and there. There are many laws that are beneficial at the start of the game, but DaLucaa recommends two of them for beginners. Starting the game, the player has 80 citizens in the city and 60 of them are capable of working. These citizens are split into three categories, a) workers: which can do most jobs in the city except for specially jobs, such as research or medicine, b) engineers: citizens that work in specially building like medical posts and workshops and c) children: who cannot work at the beginning of the game and can be seen as a burden on society. Since the main objective to complete at the start of the game is to gather the necessary resources quickly and efficiently to build the necessary infrastructure, the recommended laws include:
The player SHOULD constantly be researching for technologies in the workshop throughout every step. 3. Assign Workers to Stockpiles
4. Build Workshops
5. Build Gathering Posts around StockpilesThis is a vital step as this will allow the player to collect multiple stockpiles at the same time with a fewer amount of workers. But most importantly, when day four arrives, workers cannot be gathering from stockpiles as they will get very sick and most likely be a burden on society. Given that the player researches heaters prior to reaching day four, when the temperature drops, the heaters can be turned on which will keep the workplace at a good 'chilly' status which will allow workers to work and collect resources with a low risk of falling ill. Gathering posts are recommended to be built next and within the radius for the stockpiles that are 'cluttered' or 'grouped' next to each other to benefit from collecting multiple stockpiles at once. 6. Build Tents and Medical PostsOnce all of the previous steps are met, the player must now build a medical post and assign the remaining 5 engineers to work in there to cure the sick, as well as build tents to shelter the citizens. The player at this point is set up to do more research and to unlock resource collection technology in order to acquire resources before the stockpiles run out. ConclusionAt this point, beginners will have a solid foundation for their city to thrive and even work within the cold days of day four and to build and expand the city. Nonetheless, it is essential that research is done constantly to advance in the game quickly. The next building that is recommended for the player to build is a cookhouse for the raw food to be cooked and turned into rations and then setting up a way to gather food.
